Time for the fun to start

By Kirk Petersen

Well it’s that time of year again ladies and gents. I hope everyone has their plans all laid out as to what they are going to be doing for changes this year. We pretty much have ours ready to go, The seed has been purchased, the soil samples will head off as soon as the ground thaws enough to get a few, then it’s to the seedhouse to get some fertilizer and start digging up the beans.

Along with the food plots we have decided to add some new stand locations, we learned real fast last year that we were not set up to bow hunt and once we finally did get some stands set in prime spots the wind was NOT our friend 8 out of 10 days. We need to have at least 5 different sites to choose from depending on wind conditions. This year we will be ready and the deer won’t know what hit em.

Another thing we decided was that we need more than 1 mineral site, the site we had was in the food plot and although it was a great spot, it was right out in the open and we learned that the bucks wouldn’t show themselves during the daylight so this past weekend two new mineral (MONSTER RAXX) sites were started. One near a spot we hunted and had great success last season, the other a spot never hunted before. It’s right along the edge of the lake. the trees are about 40 yds wide right there so I’m hoping it acts like a funnel and brings them right around the lake to us. From the tree that will get a new stand we would have a 30 yd shot down to the lakes edge. We have seen bucks using the edge of the lake and walking through there we have easily twice as many scrapes in that 200 yd stretch than the rest of the 80 combined. I’m not really sure why I have waited until now to get a location down there, but you know what they say. Better late than never.

Best of luck to all with your early season preparation and remember, the season will be upon us before you know it.
